May 2020 Match of the Month

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manitowoc County has named Big Brother Dan Heilman and Little Brother Drake as the May match of the month. Every month, the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization selects a “match” to be featured. This being a special recognition that is given to a different match each month in honor of the dedication the volunteer and child have made to the other and to the organization. To celebrate, Dan and Drake were treated to free sandwiches courtesy of Subway.

Dan and Drake were matched as Big and Little in the Spring of 2019 and have been developing their friendship ever since. The two have enjoyed walking Dan’s dogs, playing cards, going out to eat, grilling, playing board games, and simply spending time together. The pair are looking forward to fishing this upcoming summer.

Dan enjoys outdoor activities such as paddle boarding, fishing, hiking and biking. Drake is a 5th grader who enjoys math, talking and going for walks. Dan and Drake have both expressed that their match has continuously been growing, this allowing them to build a stronger relationship. Dan has been glad to discuss Drake’s week and let him truly express himself during their time together, while Drake likes having the chance to share his thoughts with another person. Dan explains that he hopes to show Drake that in a world that can have its “bumps in the road”, it is still safe to reach out to find support and comfort in those who are closest to him. Drake points out that his match with Dan is something that is important to him as he has been given another person who cares for him.

Dan and Drake want to encourage others to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters. They both have gained new experiences from participating in the organization. They are making a positive impact on one another and their community. Big Brothers Big Sisters is dedicated to ensure each volunteer is paired with a child who has similar hobbies and interests. Dan and Drake have a meaningful relationship that has certainly impacted both of them forever. Being a ‘Big’ takes only an hour a week but can have a lifetime impact.
