Emily & Deryn
"I was matched with Little Sister Deryn in your Community-Based program for 2 years back when I was in high school. I thought I would share that Deryn and I still connect regularly even after I graduated and our match officially “closed”. I went off to college at UWSP in the fall of 2015 and every summer that I was home Deryn and I saw each other every week; we never skipped a beat. Deryn is now a freshman at Lincoln High School and has been thriving personally and academically."
Nicole & Ava
My overall experience with BBBS is a great one. I have gained patience, happiness, and a friend. Ava and I have become closer as time went on and have learned a lot through each other. The impact that Ava’s made on me is that she’s opened me up more where I’ve been more talkative. My biggest accomplishments as a Big so far include guiding Ava through school, more specifically trying to help her out with spelling and math, and helping her out as much as I can. If there is one thing I could give as advice to people wanting to become a Big is DO IT! You will not regret it!
Katrina & Reigha
What is your favorite thing about your little?
My favorite thing about Reigha is her incredibly kindness and thoughtfulness. She is always thinking of other people and what she can do for others. For a 10 year old to be that thoughtful has been so beautiful to see. She's taught me that no matter where we are in life, we can always do for others.
How do you feel like being a big has impacted your life?
I love being a big! It's really allowed me to consistently put someone else first and it's also made me want to become a foster parent and adopt someday. There are so many wonderful kids out there and I love getting to be friends with Reigha and watching her grow.
What advice do you have for people who are looking to volunteering as a big?
If you've contemplated being a Big, I encourage you to try it! It seems like a big commitment, and it is, but it's definitely manageable. I've received so much support from friends and family as well as the BBBS staff. I haven't felt alone or overwhelmed in the process at all. If it's something you've considered, I challenging you to take a risk and say yes. It's an awesome journey!
Dannie & Layla
When we asked Dannie what she enjoyed about the program, she said, "I just feel very lucky and rewarded to get to be her Big sister. When I walk into her classroom and see the smile on her face, I'm reminded that I can make at least one hour of her day better.”
