August 2012 Match Event - BBBS Kids' Fish Derby
Northeastern Wisconsin Great Lakes Sport Fishermen’s (NEWGLSF)
organization recently hosted
their 34th Annual Kids’ Fish Derby for Bigs and Littles in the Big Brothers Big
Sisters mentoring
program. A total of 37 Bigs and Littles boarded 13 boats at 5:00 a.m. for a
fishing adventure
on Lake Michigan on Saturday, August 4th.
Boat crews and guests were greeted with 2-foot rolling seas, hot humid weather, and the threat of pop-up rain showers. Fortunately the weather held off and every boat crew was successful in finding the young fishing adventurers some heart pounding action on the big pond. When boats started returning to Seagull Marina for weigh-in it was obvious that the salmon and trout were cooperative for Little Brothers and Little Sisters.
A total of 35 fish weighing over 325.12 pounds had been caught during the morning fishing trip. The largest fish was a 16.75 pound King Salmon caught by Little Sister Ashley Schroeder aboard the Family Fun boat owned and operated by Captain Dan Abts. Captain Wayne Monka of the Zoo Keeper helped Little Brother Alex Handl catch the second largest fish, a King Salmon that weighed in at 16.33 pounds.
Charter boat Seaduction Captained by Steve Zimmer brought in the overall largest catch of the day weighing in at 74.2 pounds. The Seaduction catch included 7 King Salmon and two RainbowTrout. Captain Don Bonfigt of the Don Ho II brought in the second largest catch of the day that included 7 fish with a weight of 54.86 pounds.
After fish weigh-in, shore lunch was provided for all participants and volunteers. Jane Bonfigt organized the shore lunch with help and donations from Two Rivers Auto Wash, Mike Martell, the Sandpiper Bar & Grill, the Waverly Inn & Pizzeria, and Club Atlantis. All children participating in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Kids’ Fish Derby received prizes donated by the Northeastern Wisconsin Great Lakes Sport Fishermen’s organization (NEWGLSF) and Seagull Marina. Trophies for the biggest fish and the biggest overall catch were donated by Manitowoc Trophy.
The 13 Captains and boats volunteering to take Little Brothers and Little Sisters fishing on Lake Michigan included: Don Bonfigt on the Don Ho II, Bruce & Jack Gilbert on the Dough Boy, Dan Abts on the Family Fun, Will Chase on the Renegade, Steve Bergner on the Rainbow Chaser, Steve Zimmer on the Seaduction, Don Daniels on the Double D, Gary Kerkman on the G Man, Jerry Nemecek on the J & J, Doug Weisshahn on the Kari Anne, Dale Laurin on the Fish Hook, Alex & Jerry Kluck on the Kestrel, and Wayne Monka and Doug Larson on the Zoo Keeper.
This is a great adventure for children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program who might never have a chance to experience the thrill of charter fishing on the great lakes. This experience also teaches children to respect and appreciate our great natural resources. It is our hope children who participate in the kids’ fish derby will get hooked on a great new hobby that will positively impact their lives and our environment in the future. Big Brothers Big Sisters and NEWGLSF extends a sincere “Thank You” to all the volunteers and Seagull Marina for making this great experience available to kids in the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program.

June 2012 Match Event - Funset Boulevard!
The June match event took us to Funset Boulevard in Appleton to enjoy a fun afternoon participating in a variety of activities. Those in attendance were given 20 tokens and a wristband that provided unlimited access to laser tag, the bumper cars, kid’s playground, carousel and train, as well as a pizza buffet. This was the first time Funset was offered as an event and the list filled up well before the deadline. Between the arcade games, mini bowling and mini golf, matches and families found plenty to occupy their time. All in all, it was a huge success and everyone enjoyed their time.
May 2012 Match Event - Timber Rattlers Game
On a scorching hot May day, our match event took us to Time Warner Cable Stadium to enjoy a day of baseball. This year before the game, we were taken on a stadium tour that took us to the batting tunnel, VIP suites, the press box and video equipment room and the bullpen. When we were near the bullpen, two baseballs were given to our group from actual batting practice. Two of our Littles were awarded the baseballs. We also were given information about the Timber Rattlers and stadium improvements that have been made since they have become a low-class A affiliation of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Before the game started, one of our matches went onto the field and played catch. During the game, people enjoyed some delicious ballpark food like hot dogs, cheese fries and ice cream. All in all, it was a great Sunday to take in baseball and it was a hit with everyone in attendance!
