Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manitowoc County has named Big Sister Kari Resch and Little Sister Michelle Dolphin as its match of the month for July.
Each month, the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization selects a “match” for this recognition. The award is given in honor of the commitment the volunteer and child have made to each other and to the organization in developing a special friendship. This month Kari and Michelle are going to be treated to a free pizza buffet courtesy of Pizza Ranch.
What is really neat about this match, is that “little”, Michelle, is now also serving as a “Big” in a school based partnership in Valders. Kari and Michelle have been matched together since 2011 and their relationship has grown ever since. Becky Wilhelm, Program Director at BBBS, explains that Kari has provided Michelle with a positive and consistent presence and it is wonderful to see how Michelle is giving back and doing the same thing with her own Little Sister. In the school based program, a high school student is matched with an elementary school student to visit with once or twice a week during the school day.
Michelle explains that what she enjoys most about her match with Kari is that she feels like she is able to talk about anything. Kari echoes this sentiment and notes “not only have I been there for Michelle throughout the years, but she has been there for me too. It’s not uncommon for us to discuss our personal lives and things going on in them.” Michelle has become part of Kari’s family, and Kari’s own kids know and love Michelle too.
Kari and Michelle have ridden the car ferry together across Lake Michigan, often dine out, grab ice cream, do crafts, or go shopping together. A really special event they attended together was a cake decorating class. Kari loves the opportunity to do things with Michelle that she wouldn’t do alone or with her own kids. They both are large supporters of the program and would like to see others volunteer to be a part of it. Kari explains, “Our outings are not always super long or every week, making fitting our outings in, convenient for both of our busy lives. I know there is always a waitlist for kids looking for Big. I want to encourage you to sign up!” Michelle added that as a little, it is nice to have someone reliable in your life who you know you can count on to help you make good decisions. She said that being matched with Kari as a mentor has helped make her a better mentor as well.
It’s clear that this duo has made a really special lifelong connection that has enhanced both of their lives. If you would like to learn more or get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters, contact the Manitowoc agency at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 920-684-7445.
